Current mycotoxicological profile of Serbian feed

Mycotoxins are secondary metabolites of different types of fungus, belonging primarily to five genera: Alternaria, Aspergillus, Cladosporium, Penicillium and Fusarium.They commonly enter the food chain through contaminated food and feed crops, mainly cereals, which get infested prior to and during harvest, or during (improper) storage. Although there are over 300 mycotoxins that have been isolated and chemically characterized, worldwide research has focused on those forms causing significant injuries to humans and animals. This paper presents test results of 153 samples of feed for different species and categories of animals for the presence of aflatoxins, ochratoxin, T-2/HT-2 toxin and zearalenone. Significant presence of aflatoxins was detected in about 75% of these samples, among which 35% exceeded the maximum permitted levels, so did not correspond to the Serbian regulation.
