The rice variety OM 9916 was developed from the cross of OM 5930/Pokkali made in 2008 and selected for multi-location trials from 2011. The results of research and testing showed that OM 9916 could tolerate to salinity at a concentration of 4‰, had growth duration of 100-110 days, and had a high yield potential of 7-9 tons/ha in Winter- spring season and 5-7 tons/ha in Summer -Autumn season. Additionally, OM 9916 possessed good grain quality to meet the export criteria, specially it had a high head rice recovery, light aroma and low amylose content (18-19%). OM 9916 was moderately resistant to brown plant hopper and yellow dwarf and rice ragged stunt diseases, but slightly susceptible to blast. This variety was widely adapted and suitable to all cropping seasons. It can be introduced for production in both saline-affected and favorable environments.
