The cryopreservation of preimplantation embryos of domestic mammalian livestock species has become a routine practice in animal production. Embryo cryopreservation is an integral part of genetic improvement programmes utilizing embryo transfer and also is vital to germplasm preservation programmes. The purpose of this review is to provide the reader with the background and history of embryo cryopreservation as well as insights into current trends in the cryopreservation of preimplantation embryos of cattle, sheep, goats, pigs and horses.
