As pigs are present in almost every country in the world, they are one of the most important species in the transmission of zoonotic diseases. Based on the form of transmission, zoonotic diseases can roughly be divided into two categories: the ones transmitted via direct contact (for example, Influenza A virus) and those that are food-borne (for example, <i>Salmonella</i> spp.). Many different viruses, bacteria and even parasites found in the pigs are zoonotic pathogens, although the risk of human infection varies considerably among them. Using the situation in the European Union as a basis, this review provides an overview about the current situation of zoonotic diseases in pigs, with a special focus on <i>Salmonella</i> spp. and Influenza A virus as representatives of their respective forms of transmission. The future of diagnostics for zoonotic diseases and the use of vaccines in prevention are also addressed.
