Pulse improvement through biotechnology: achievements and future perspectives.

Pulses play a significant role in world agriculture because they provide a protein-rich diet to poor and marginal sections of population, especially in developing nations. However, pulse production all over the world has been stagnant for several reasons: a narrow genetic base, susceptibility to large number of biotic and abiotic stresses, photoperiod sensitivity and low native nutritional value. Successful augmentation of traditional approaches to plant breeding based on advances in applied biotechnology has assumed utmost significance and considered crucial for future realization of yield potential and value addition. In recent days, three areas of molecular research: transgenics, marker-aided dissection and breeding of important traits and genomics have contributed significantly towards pulse improvement in general. Increased research emphasis in future on enhancing the efficiency of <i>Agrobacterium</i>-mediated transformation protocols, development of high throughput genotyping techniques for large-scale marker-assisted selection (MAS) and genetic manipulation for balanced amino acid and carbohydrate composition through nutritional genomics is likely to bring in profound gains in pulse production and nutritional enhancement.
