This study analyzes food security of vulnerable households. For this, we develop the household food security index (HFSI) that is based on the cause-result framework. The cause indices are divided into four major areas: economic, health, social, and support area. The data from Korea Welfare Panel Study (2012-2015) were used to evaluate food security of vulnerable households using HFSI. We also estimate the effects of cause variables on the result index using the panel tobit models. The results indicate that the level and volatility of vulnerable households’ food security are getting worse during the sample period. Disposable income (economic area), health status (health area), family relations and social friendship satisfaction (social area), and the total national basic living benefit (support area) are found to be the significant factors affecting food security of vulnerable households. We draw some policy suggestions to improve the food accessibility of the households.
