Sequestration of GHG [greenhouse gas] emission of Technological University of the Philippines

The greenhouse gas inventory is the first step to sustain the normal temperature of earth thus preventing climate change. TUP [Technological Univ. of the Philippines] as an institution of learning and a member of the academe, has an obligation and responsibility to respond to the call to protect the environment and save the earth. The average annual GHG emission of TUP, Manila campus was assessed, based on electrical consumption, for the last 3 years (2012-2014). The result of the assessment was used as the basis in the projection of the partial GHG emission of the University Manila Campus for the next 5 years. An inventory of the existing trees planted around the Manila campus was utilized in determining the status of GHG sequestration of TUPM. The identified existing trees were grouped based on their diameter breast height (DBH) and were classified as to hardwood or evergreen trees for the estimation of CO2 sequestration and carbon storage. The method used for the overall estimation of carbon sequestration was adopted from carbon calculator by the U.S. Forest Service Climate Change Resource Center. For the base year 2013, only 0.624% eCO2 was sequestered from electrical consumption alone, while there was 14.24% stored carbon for the same year. In order that the TUPM beable to comply with the binding targets of the Kyoto Protocol of 0% eCO2 by year 2020, it should have planted 39,436 hardwood trees or 118,307 evergreen trees with DBH of 10 inches by the end of 2019 for 0% eCO2 from projected electrical consumption only for 2020. Emission of CO2 based on fuel consumption by the university vehicles and waste generated by both university personnel and students was not included in this study.
