Evaluation of adulteration and microbiological quality of milk sold at different places in Faisalabad city

Milk samples collected from four different sources in Faisalabad City by random sampling method were evaluated for nine different types of adulterants as formalin, urea, starch, hydrogen peroxide, detergents, carbonates, cane sugar, boric acid and antibiotics by using standard qualitative techniques and microbiological quality by total viable bacterial count method. In the milk samples collected from gawalas adulteration of formalin, urea, starch, hydrogen peroxide, detergents, carbonates, cane sugar, boric acid and antibiotics was found in 26.04, 56.25, 0, 15.62, 8.33, 8.33, 18.75, 0 and 4.17% samples, respectively. In milk samples of dairy shops adulteration of formalin, urea, starch, hydrogen peroxide, detergents, carbonates, cane sugar, boric acid and antibiotics was found in 16.66, 42.71, 11.46, 12.50, 6.25, 0, 22.92, 9.38, and 0% samples, respectively. While in case of milk samples collected from canteens formalin was found in 22.92, urea in 52.08, hydrogen peroxide in 17.71, detergents in 18.75, cane sugar in 13.54 and antibiotics in 3.12% samples. There was no adulteration of starch, carbonates and boric acid in the milk samples collected from canteens. In case of processed milk the adulteration of starch, hydrogen peroxide and cane sugar was found in 6.25, 15.63 and 46.62% milk samples, respectively. The total viable bacterial count was within normal range for 58.33, 62.50, 64.58 and 100% milk samples collected from gawalas, dairy shops, canteens and processed milk, respectively. Milk samples of gawalas, dairy shops and canteens showed very bad status of adulteration and microbial load, while processed milk samples were free from most of the adulterants and having good microbial quality.
