Combined effect of NaCl and KC1 salts on chlorophyll content and ion uptake of maize (Zea mays L.) plants

NaCI salinity in combination with other salts is a major problem of the world. In current research work salt stress was applied to hybrid maize plants i.e. (EV-77 and EV-78). Effects of additional supply of K+ salts to plant under salt stress was evaluated using ion accumulation and relative water content and pigment concentrations as stress indicators. Furthermore, affects of the treatment on chlorophyll content and inorganic ion accumulation in shoots, roots and leaves was determined. In this regard a sand culture experiment was conducted in wire house of Old Botanical Garden, Lalazar Colony, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad. Two hybrid maize grains i.e. (EV-77 and EV-78) were used for this study. Three salt treatments i.e. (0mM, 150mM NaCI and 150mM NaCI + 10mM KCI) were applied with Hoagland's nutrient solution. After the establishment of treatment, data was recorded and analyzed statistically. After one week of salt application, photosynthesis rate and chlorophyll contents of the maize plant were remarkably decreased with increasing salinity in both maize lines. The results revealed that salinity significantly (P less than or equal to 0.05) affects all the parameters of maize lines under study and supplementary KCI can reduce the adverse effects of mild level of saline conditions on plant growth and physiological development. At the end of the experiment, the plant growth was significantly decreased with increasing salinity. However, the Na+ ions accumulation was increased with increasing salt stress, and it seems to affect the bioenergetic processes of photosynthesis. Among both maize lines, EV-78 found more salt tolerant than EV-77.
