Soil organic carbon dynamics, water use efficiency and maize (Zea mays L.) yield under various irrigation and manure application rates

Present research is designed to study the effects of different irrigation and manure levels on organic carbon sequestration into the soil, water use efficiency (WUE) and crop growth. Four treatments comprising of two irrigation levels (irrigation @ 100 % of field capacity (FC) and irrigation @ 150 % of FC) and two manure levels (@ 0 Mg/ha and 15 Mg/ha) each with three replications were arranged in Completely Randomized Design (CRD) according to two factorial experiment. Maize plants were grown in soil columns and harvested at maturity. Crop was irrigated according to the moisture conditions of soil in columns. After crop harvesting soil samples were collected and organic carbon content in soil was determined. The data collected showed the significant positive effect on Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) sequestration and yield parameters of maize crop. Irrigation quantity effected the organic carbon deposition in different soil depths and WUE was directly affected.
