Use of plant extracts and neem oil for coating urea to improve nitrogen use efficiency and grain yield of rice (Oryza sativa) under field conditions

Immediate release of NH4+ in bulk from applied urea reduces nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) due to volatilization losses, nitrification and leaching. However, NUE can be improved with application of plants extracts and neem oil coated urea which may results in controlled and slow release of N from urea. To investigate the effect of neem oil coated urea, garlic extract coated urea and mentha extract coated urea a field experiment was conducted, rice was used as a test crop for grain production and NUE. The study was designed according to randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Nitrogen from coated urea was applied with different rates (140 kg per ha N and 112 kg per ha N) in three splits. For fertilizer use efficiency, chemical analyses was carried out to determine N, P and K in plant and grain and their uptakes was calculated. Data obtained was analyzed using standard statistical procedures. Statistical data indicated that there was positive response of rice to application of neem oil coated urea. More yield was obtained by application of 140 kg per ha N from neem oil coated urea. N use efficiency was more in treatments which receive neem oil coated urea.
