Effect of supplementing exogenous protease in poultry by product meal-based diets on growth performance, carcass characteristics and nutrient digestibility in broilers

The present study was designed to evaluate the effect of exogenous proteases in poultry by-product meal-based broiler diets on performance and nutrient digestibility. A total of 160 one-d-old broiler chicks were randomly allotted to four treatment groups with four replicates (10 birds/ replicate) under each treatment using CRD. Four iso-caloric and iso-nitrogenous (ME 2850, CP 20) diets were formulated. T1 (No poultry by-product meal; No enzyme), T2 (No poultry byproduct meal: with enzyme), T3 (3% poultry by-product meal supplemented with proteases) and T4 (6% poultry by-product meal supplemented with proteases) were fed throughout the experiment. A digestibility assay was conducted from day 31-35th using acid insoluble ash as an external marker @ 1% in the diet. Two birds from each replicate were picked randomly at the end of the trial (day 35th) and slaughtered for determining carcass characteristics. Feed intake and weight gain were not affected (p greater than 0.05) during starter (day 1-21) and finisher (day 22-35) phase among all treatment groups. However, feed conversion ratio was significantly improved (p less than 0.05) in birds under treatment T3 during the same periods. Breast meat yield was better (p less than 0.05) in birds fed on diet T1 while carcass yield, thigh meat yield and soft organ weights were not affected (p greater than 0.05) by dietary treatments. The nutrient digestibility data on dry matter (p less than 0.05), crude protein (p less than 0.05), ether extract (p less than 0.05) and crude fiber (p less than 0.05) showed that group T3 had better nutrient digestibility except in crude fiber. The present study demonstrated that 3% poultry by-product meal with protease supplementation resulted in better performance in terms of feed intake, weight gain, feed conversion ratio and nutrient digestibility.
