Correlation and heritability analysis of important morphological traits in upland cotton

The objective of the study was to find correlation and heritability of agronomic traits in upland cotton. Correlation coefficient revealed that plant height associated positively with number of monopodial branches per plant, number of sympodial branches per plant, bolls per plant, boll weight, seed cotton yield, fibre length, fibre strength and fibre fineness. Monopodial branches linked positively with sympodial branches, bolls/plant, boll weight and seed cotton yield. Number of sympodial branches per plant showed positive association with bolls per plant and boll weight. Number of bolls per plant showed negative correlation with boll weight and positive correlation with fibre length, fibre strength, fibre fineness and seed cotton yield. Boll weight exhibited positive association with seed cotton yield and fibre length. Weight of 100 seeds had negative correlation with ginning out turn. Ginning out turn correlated positively with seed cotton yield. Fibre length, fibre strength and fibre fineness showed positive relationship with each others. Highest broad sense heritability was found for seed cotton yield while lowest heritability was observed for weight of 100 seeds. Plant height, sympodial branches, bolls per plant, boll weight, ginning out turn, fibre fineness and fibre length showed moderate heritability estimates. Monopodial branches exhibited low heritability value while fibre strength showed high broad sense heritability.
