The production of green energy is not just an alternative for the production and consumption of fossil fuels. Nowadays, it has to justify its role as a sustainable activity, acceptable from economic, but also from a social and environmental point of view. Autonomous Province of Vojvodina has favorable conditions and a great raw material base for the development of biomass utilization, which motivates the local rural communities to adapt to the trend of an increased usage of renewable energy potential, which they evidently possess. This research was conducted in order to show, through the case study of Kula municipality, the possibility which in this sense the majority of local rural communities possesses, but do not use. The results of the recapitulation of the sectors that can produce biomass has led to the total energy potential of biomass of 164.087 MWh annually, which is 85% of the total electricity consumption of the inhabitants in the municipality of Kula. It is concluded, that the development of the local rural communities mainly depends on correctly prepared development strategies of the energy sector, but the decision makers must take into account not only the economic effects, but also the long-term well-being of the local population.
