Development of supply and demand of selected cereals in Slovakia and their economic efficiency in the years 2010-2014

In the long term the growing area of cereals in Slovakia achieve more than 50 % from total arable land area. Our crucial cereal commodities are wheat, barley and grain corn. Hence the contribution deals with evaluation of elements development within agricultural and food market and economic efficiency of presented cereals cultivation. Volume of available cereal sources in Slovakia for domestic use and export is mainly determined by production. Cereals demand reflects domestic consumption and export. During evaluated period the wheat participated on total cereal sources in average by 42.1 %, grain corn by 38.8 % and barley by 14.8 %. Principal tendency of cereals utilisation is food use that moved on cereals production at level 33.3 % (average) in the last five years however it had expressions of moderate decline or stagnation. On the other hand it has increased non- food use in the last years, particularly corn for bio-ethanol. Economic efficiency of cereals cultivation as other agricultural commodities too is significantly affected by input prices, sale prices and level of national and direct supports of the EU.
