Selected aspects of food industry economics and foreign trade of EU countries

The paper deals with economic and social aspects of EU food industry and its foreign trade with agri-food commodities. It accentuates the development of selected indicators at the whole EU level and also at the level of individual countries and food industries. Out of the analyses it results that EU production of food and beverages have been increased. The biggest food producer is Germany, the contribution of Slovakia is minimal. As compared to Slovakia, the majority of old member states reached markedly higher labour productivity from value added. The financial volume of EU agri-food foreign trade has been increased. In the long term the EU reached the negative trade balance with agri-food commodities.
