Pharmacognostic evaluation and phytochemical screening of therhizomes of ZingiberofficinaleRoscoe (cv Moran) locally known as‘MoranAda’, revealed the presence of some bioactive components, which have been linked to antimicrobial properties. Phytochemicalscreening showed the presence of alkaloid, glycoside, tannins, phenols, saponin and flavonoid when tested on aqueousandmethanolicextracts of Z.officinaleRoscoe. The effects ofmethanolic and aqueous extracts on some pathogenic bacterialstrains viz.: Staphylococcus aureus, Enterobacteraerogens,Klebisiellapneumoniae, Bacillus subtilis and Escherisia coli respectively, showed that the plant part can be used to treat infections caused bythese bacteria. The aqueous and methanolic extracts also showedantibacterial activity but the significant antimicrobial activity wasshown by aqueous extract against all the bacteria, while moderateactivity was shown by the methanolic extract. The effectiveness ofthe crude extract confirmed its use in traditional medicineto treatasthma, cough, common cold, fever, sinusitisand othergastrointestinal diseases.
