Experiment was carried out in both – plant growth room and polycarbonate greenhouse of the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies. Lettuce Lactuca sativa L. var. foliosum cv. ‘Dubacek’ was grown under Lumigrow light emitting diodes (LED) strips – dominant wavelength red with 14 h photoperiod and total photosynthetic active radiation (PAR) 100 µmol mE-2 sE-1 . LED strips were used in plant growth room as the main source of illumination, but in polycarbonate greenhouse – like additional illumination. Lettuce length, amount of leaves and weight were measured three times during plant vegetation period. It was found in the experiment that red light makes plants significantly longer. Plant weight and number of leaves changed, but statistically significant differences were not noted. By looking up on tendencies, the shortest plants with higher weight and more leaves were obtained in polycarbonate greenhouse where red LED light was given like additional illumination.
