Review on the potential of Canarium ovatum Engl. as carbon sink: an approach to mitigate climate change in the province of Sorsogon [Philippines]

Canarium ovatum Engl., pili is indigenous in the Philippines. The bulk of its production comes from the Province of Sorsogon ~ the 'Pili Basket' in the region. Its seed is highly valued due to its rich vitamin E content that is at par with almond and macadamia nuts. Aside from its economic importance, pili is recognized as a plant species that can cope with the adverse impact of climate change. Together with the bulk of its trunk and leaves, its root system serves as carbon sinks and wind breaks. The study was conducted to approximate the amount of carbon that can be stored in pili trees. A total of 78 female trees from Bulan, Sorsogon were investigated. The inventoried trees have a total tree biomass value of 252.92 tons and store 113.81 tons of carbon.
