Direct seeded rice reduces the need for intensive labor during crop establishment. However, poor seedling emergence is a serious problem observed in farmer's field where direct seeded rice is practiced. Most varieties were bred for transplanted rice. Developing a variety that can improve seedling emergence at deep seeding is very important to protect the seeds from rodents and birds. Previous studies have shown that each variety have a seeding depth limit to which it will emerge and produce good crop stand. Laboratory and screenhouse experiments were conducted to determine the relationship of seedling emergence, seedling depth, mesocotyle length, and seedling height. Mesocotyl length ranged from 0 cm to 66 cm and seedling height ranged from 65 cm to 167 cm. Seedling emergence across seeding depths varied significantly. At 10 cm seeding depth, regardless of genotype, 52.8% and 33.8% seedling emergence was observed in the preliminary and core experiment, respectively. Mesocotyl length and seedling height increased with increasing seeding depth.
