The migration and behaviors of Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) using data from 27 “Pop-up” electronic tags (PAT MK10 and MiniPAT) deployed in the western and central Mediterranean and in the Atlantic coast of Morocco were analyzed. The results indicate that part of the bluefin tuna population remains in the central and western Mediterranean basins for much of the year, revealing the residency of these fishes in these areas. The Mediterranean was identified as an important habitat for this species, not only as spawning ground, but also as an overwintering foraging ground. The resident tunas co-occurred with high migratory ones in the same spawning areas in the central and western basins, but none crossed over to the eastern Mediterranean, which suggests a more complex population structure. Furthermore, a possible spawning area near the Canary Islands and the occurrence of potential Mediterranean spawners in North Atlantic waters beyond the 45º W were observed. In this study, the horizontal and vertical movements of bluefin tuna were analyzed and their oceanographic preferences during the spawning period were described.
