Coffee may represent the highest total value of all tradedagricultural commodities, but it has high volatility in price. This volatility affects farmers' decisions at strategic andtactical level, to adopt and manage coffee-based land useoptions. Where previous analyses of the profitability ofvarious land use options have focused on long termaverages, decision making in practice will follow the upsand downs of farmers expectations of benefits, that dependon their learning style and the information available. TheFALLOW Model includes a highly stylized representationof a decision-making process by farmers that is mainly basedon an integration of past performance and the most recentexperience at landscape/community scale. Based on thismodel, price volatility substantially increases the timeperiod required for farmers to settle on the mulistrata, mixedproduction system ('shade coffee') that probably representsthe best strategic choice in the long run, for both farmersincome and impact on watershed functions
