Effect of plasticizer and pH values on properties of sunflower oil cake biopolymer films

High protein amount of vegetable oil industry byproducts (cake, pellets and husk) makes them convenient resource for biopolymer material synthesis. Previous studies have shown that sunflower proteins have great properties for producing protein isolate films. The aim of this paper was synthesis and characterisation of biodegradable composite films based on whole sunflower oil cake. Influence of film composition (plasticizer amount: 10%, 20% and 30%) and process parameters (pH value: 10 and 12) on obtained film properties was examined. Composite biopolymer films based on entire sunflower oil cake were characterized by examining mechanical, barrier and physicochemical properties: thickness, tensile strength and elongation at break, water vapour barrier properties, water content, swelling and solubility. Based on the obtained results it can be concluded that biopolymer films synthesized at higher pH value have better mechanical properties. The pH value does not have significant effect on the water vapor permeability, while the amount of plasticizer significantly affects the water vapor permeability. Biopolymer film samples with higher amount of plasticizer have higher moisture content, due to hydrophilic nature. In addition, samples with a smaller amount of plasticizer have a higher swelling degree. Solubility increases along with a pH increase, while the plasticizer content does not have a significant effect.
