The main problems of deposit of municipal waste are related to the negative impact on the environment, and among them, the most obvious question, is certainly, leachate or landfill filtrate. When the filtrate contains high concentrations of organic pollutants and ammonia, nitrogen is discharged or drained with no treatment to the water recipient. The same negative environmental effect occurs as a result of rapid growth of algae and increased oxygen consumption. For this paper the results of leachate monitoring from the landfill Ramići near Banja Luka conducted in the period January 2006 - December 2013, were used with the aim to determine the influence of their composition on the quality of surface water. In this case the stream Glogovac and further to river Dragočaj and Vrbas were subsequent water recipients. The physical-chemical characterization of the leachate, shown through the statistical analysis of the relevant quality parameters, showed that during the entire period of monitoring their composition exhibited elevated concentrations for almost all parameters (except for temperature and pH value) and exceeded the limit values prescribed by the Regulations on the conditions of wastewater in surface water (Official Gazette RS, 2001). The average BOD5/COD ratio for the multi-year monitoring period was 0.227, indicating that the landfill Ramići, as the old landfill, is mainly located in the methanogenic degradation stage. Monitoring water recipient (stream Glogovac) at the site of a regional landfill Ramići, was carried out in parallel with the examination of the leachate, in the period 2006 – 2013. Stream Glogovac showed a constant tendency of increased concentrations mainly of those pollutants that increased as well in leachate (BOD5, COD, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, chloride, and so forth). There is a direct correlation between the organic contamination of the leachate and the stream Glogovac showed through COD and BOD5 values. Based on this it can be concluded that the potential of water recipient self-purification was insufficient to overcome the entered quantity of organic pollutants. The results of these surveys indicate the necessary purification of landfill filtrate before discharge into surface water or surrounding soil.
