Effects of application of colored shade nets in tomato growing on bioactive compounds content in tomato fruits

The tomato plant belongs to the Solanaceae family. Fruit of the plant is rich in compounds with strong antioxidant activity, such as lycopene, vitamin C and phenols. One possible way of preserving plants from the negative effects of direct sunlight throughout the growing season, is use of colored shade nets. The effects of application of pearl and red colored shade nets in tomato growing during the summer period on lycopene, vitamin C and total phenolic compound contents in fruit were investigated for four tomato varieties. Contents of lycopene, vitamin C and phenolic compound were determined using spectrophotometric method. Results showed notable differences in content of the examined compounds between the investigated varieties. Results also indicated that there were significant (P≤0.01) changes in phenolic compound content, which was lower in tomato fruit grown under colored shade nets. In vitamin C and lycopene no significant changes were registered in tomato grown under the colored shade nets in comparison to the tomato exposed directly to the sunlight.
