Mycotoxins are one of the most important limiting factors of contemporary agricultural production and food safety. These compounds are secondary metabolites of toxigenic fungi causing different diseases of cultivated plants. Mycotoxin- producing fungi mostly attack weakened and damaged plant tissue. The most important toxigenic fungi belong to the genera: Aspergillus, Penicillium, Fusarium and Alternaria. Diseases that mycotoxins cause in humans and animals are called mycotoxicosis. Due to the enormous impact on human health, it is necessary to prevent the infection of plants with toxigenic fungi and constantly control the amount of mycotoxins present in agricultural products. One of the methods for prevention and control of infections caused by toxigenic fungi is biological control, which has been increasingly studied in recent years. Considering the use of substances that do not have harmful effects on the environment and human and animal health, biological control has a significant place in modern plant protection. This method of controling plant diseases can be applied during vegetation or during storage, and it primarily involves the use of antagonistic microorganisms and essential oils, microbiological detoxification and inhibition of mycotoxins absorption.
