La biologie et l'élevage des poissons-chats = The biology and culture of catfishes

Le premier Atelier international sur les Bases biologiques de l'Aquaculture des SILuriformes (BASIL) s'est tenu à Montpellier du 24 au 27 mai 1994 où il a rassemblé près de cent cinquante scientifiques originaires de trente deux pays de tous les continents. Cet atelier organisé par le Groupe aquaculture continentale méditerranéenne et tropicale (GAMET), associant le Cemagref, le CIRAD et l'ORSTOM, avait pour objectifs de réaliser une synthèse des connaissances sur la biologie des poissons-chats et de faire le point sur l'état actuel de leur élevage dans le monde et des problèmes liés aux systèmes de production, à la qualité des produits et à leur commercialisation. Après une présentation générale de la diversité biologique et de l'histoire naturelle de ces poissons, BASIL a permis de dresser un bilan des connaissances et de dégager des voies de recherche prioritaires en abordant les thèmes suivants : reproduction - génétique - alimentation, nutrition et croissance - physiologie et adaptation - pathologie et parasitisme. Les particularités régionales qui peuvent exister en matière de choix d'espèces (autochtones ou introduite), de systèmes de production aquacole et de contraintes de marché ont également fait l'objet d'un examen approfondi.

"BASIL", the first international workshop on the Biological Bases for Aquaculture of SILuriformes, was held at Montpellier, 24-27 May 1994 and brought together one hundred and fifty scientists from thirthy two countries across the continents. This workshop was organized by the "Groupe aquaculture méditerranéenne et tropicale" (GAMET) which associates Cemagref, CIRAD and ORSTOM. It intended to pool together and synthesize biological knowledge on catfishes and to take stock of the present state of both their farming in the world and the problems associated with the quality of products and their marketing. After a general presentation of the biological diversity and natural history of these fishes, "BASIL" enabled us to assess our knowledge and select priority lines of research by tackling the following topics : reproduction - genetics - nutrition, feeding and growth - physiology and adaptation - pathology and parasitism. The regional particularities which may arise concerning the choice of species (native or introduced), production systems and market restrictions were also examined in detail.
