Use of a 3D dynamometric horseshoe for the measurement of ground reaction force and moments in horses trotting on right and left circles on different surfaces

It is well recognized that turning increases the expression of several distal forelimb lameness conditions in the horse. However little is known about the kinetics (force and moments) in horses trotting on circles. There is a need for further quantification, especially in circumstances that are routinely used for the clinical examination of lame horses. The objective of this study was to measure 3D GRF and moments on right and left circles on different ground surfaces following a protocol used in daily clinical practice. The right front hoof of 3 horses was equipped with a dynamometric horseshoe composed of 4 triaxial piezoelectric force sensors. 3D GRF and moments were measured as the horses were lunged on right and left 4m radius circles on asphalt and sand&fibres arena as well as on 2.5m radius circles on a rubber mat. Peaks of maximal transversal (Y) force and moments around the longitudinal and vertical axes were increased on shorter rubber mat circles and decreased on sand & fibres circles compared to asphalt. These results give some precise indications to the clinicians for grading stresses exerted on the distal forelimb on different surfaces and circle radius, currently used for clinical examination of lame horses.
