Although the introduction of GMO plant and plant material to the U.S. market has been met with little opposition; in Europe, it has led to considerable polemic, destruction of field trials, boycott by supermarkets, and even violence. In response to this, the European community has developed the most severe GMO regulations in the world. The need for traceability and detection of GMO has led to some technical difficulties that have been discussed by the European Network of GMO Laboratories, which gives advice to the European Commission. In particular, unauthorized and unknown GMOs, which may contaminate shipments destined for Europe, pose considerable difficulties for current detection methods. The increasing proportion of GMO being produced, with the consequent increasing admixing, may pose problems of animal feed supply, upon which Europe is dependent. This may, in turn, lead to food price increases in Europe.
