Comparative development of three species of Yam bean (Pachyrhizus erosus, P. tuberosus and P. ahipa)

The development of P. tuberosus (TC355), P. ahipa (AC203) and P. erosus (EC) were followed from February 1996 during 120 Day after sowing (DAS) in 4-l pots. Fresh and dry weight of the plant different organs were measured weekly or every fifteen days from 30 DAS. Flower buds, flowers and pods appeared first on AC203 (at 40, 60 and 75 DAS), then on EC (at 75, 90 and 110 DAS) and finally on TC355 (at 120, >120 and >>120 DAS). The plant total dry matter production after 120 days, were similar in EC and TC355 and 54% higher than in AC203. Partitioning of dry matter into the various organs were quite different. Leaves represented 28, 20 and 61% of the DM respectively in EC, AC203 and TC355. AC203 made essentially pods (63% of DM at 120 DAS). EC started tuber bulking as soon as 45 DAS, stopped it the time of making flowers and pods. TC355 developped essentially leaves and roots (78% of the plant DM at 120 DAS) and was late flowering and tuberizing. The DM content of tap root were similar in the three species at 45 DAS (about 18%), then it increased to 30 and 20% respectively in TC 355 and AC203, but decreased to 11% in EC at 105 DAS. Although EC tuber had the lowest DM content, it had the highest fresh weight at 120 DAS (3.5 time the TC355 one).
