The potential for revival of mountain tourism in the Central Caucasus.

The article deals with the special significance of mountain passes of the Central Caucasus for the revival of mountain tourism and on terms of the country’s defense capability. At all the society development stages, mountain passes were one of the main objects for the movement and resettlement of people and a strategic field for the defense potential of the country. The mountain passes connected the neighboring countries economically, socially and politically. There are several such passes on the Central Caucasus. These mountain passes and peaks were investigated by both local and foreign researchers. In the last century, special attention was paid to the development of the tourism industry-related issues: intensive development of the Caucasian passes was initiated; various routes were organized, campsites and visitor centers were arranged. The Central Caucasus passes are interesting for tourists because of their natural surroundings, historical development, ethnography, habits and customs, etc. Several prospective types of mountain tourism include: hiking/backpacking, wildlife viewing, fishing, cycling, kayaking/canoeing, motor boating, golfing and wildflower viewing, etc. The route most promising for such activities are named. It is desirable to include these routes into the international route network.
