Biodiversity of medicinal, aromatic, dye, melliferous, spice and poisonous plants of Georgia.
2020
Georgia's rich and unique phytogenetic fund is a natural-historical and strategic treasure that needs constant conservation and restoration, as it is destroyed or changed by various natural or anthropological impacts. The problem is relevant for our country, which is the center of origin of many cultivated plants and their wild ancestors. Unique species of medicinal, aromatic, melliferous, honey, coloring, spice and poisonous plants are found here, which are not found anywhere else. Many of them are now on the verge of extinction, erosive processes of genetic resources, their uncontrolled export are underway. Therefore, it is essential to provide ex situ and in situ/on-pharm conservation of biodiversity. In order to preserve the genetic and species diversity, it is necessary to raise awareness about the importance of protecting and rationally using the unique flora of Georgia for future use; intensification and sustainable use of ethnobotanical traditions and mechanisms for the promotion of phytoproduction, by integrating the principles of benefit sharing with the rights granted by the Convention on Biological Diversity, of which Georgia is a member.
