Agronomy Principles are the Cornerstones for Sustainable Agriculture

Importance of ‘Principles of Agronomy’ was realized during the first Green-Revolution period (1964-1971) in India. These principles became the strong base for maximization in wheat productivity. Since then, India became selfsufficient in foodgrain production. The successful journey of intensive crop cultivation started from 1970-71 with 108 million tons total foodgrain production. In 2000-2001, it reached up to 211 million tons. Just a decade after (2010-2011), there was a record production of 241 million tonnes which brought golden moment in India to implement the ‘Food- Security Act-2013’. By 2020, we have to enhance our total food-grain production to 295 million tonnes. It is ascertained that India will be able to achieve this target. The sustainable agricultural technology will be on priority in the form of modern concepts as described in this article. At present in India, we are having 141.1 million hectare net cultivated area. It is also to mention that 47 million hectare cultivated land is sown more than once and 10.9 million hectare is under permanent pastures and grazing land. The probability of increasing the cropping intensity from 135% to at least 200% by such developments may also be worked out. Surely, this type of progress in Agriculture Sector along with harmony with the biosphere will definitely contribute significantly in meeting the changing requirements of increasing population of the country.
