Influence of micronutrients on growth and yield of potato (Solanum tuberosum) cultivars

A field experiment was conducted during 2003-04 to study the effect of different micronutrients on growth and yield of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) cultivars on black soils. The micronutrients used were zinc sulphate (0.05%), copper sulphate (0.05%) and magnesium sulphate (0.05%) along with a control treatment. The seed tubers treated with ZnSo4 (0.05%) recorded the higher plant height (45.8 and 62.9 cm), number of stems/hill (2.94 and 4.39), leaf area (40.7 and 55.0 cm2) and dry matter content (17.1 and 74.9 g) at 45 and 60 days after planting respectively. Similarly the ZnSo4 treated plants also recorded significantly higher number (4.67) and yield (218 g, ie 54.1%) of seed size tuber yield/plant. Seed treatment with ZnSo4 (0.05%) obtained maximum (21.4 tonnes) tuber yield/ha over CuSo4 (20.0 tonnes) and MgSo4 (18.7 tonnes). Among the cultivars, 'Kufri Pukhraj' showed higher response to ZnSO4 with regards to growth and yield parameters. Maximum tuber yield (21.4 tonnes/ha) was recorded in 'Kufri Pukhraj' when seed tuber was treated with ZnS04 @ 0.05%
