A preliminary study on the maintenance of a single dominant microalgae Chlorella sp. in co-cultivation with tiger shrimp Penaeus monodon.

The microalgae Chlorella sp. has many uses because of its high lipid content. It can be used as biomass for biodiesel production as well as a source of feed for rotifer and Artemia in fry production in aquaculture industry. In this study we co-cultivated Chlorella sp. together with shrimp in aquarium tanks (photobioreactors) where the shrimps provide CO2 and nutrients to Chlorella, and in return, the Chlorella supply 02 to the shrimps. This symbiotic relationship ofautotroph - heterotroph maintained water quality in the photobioreactors. However, we found that Chlorella sp. in the shrimp tanks were contaminated with other unwanted microalgae species especially cyanobacteria. To avoid contamination, we tested three different Chlorella sp. inoculum concentrations: 0.5 x 106, I X 106and 3 x 10'cells/ml and three different percentages of harvest, i.e: 10, 30, 50% to determine the best inoculum concentrations anddensity of Chlorella sp. that can avoid the invasion of the unwanted foreign species. The results of the studies showed that the most effective initial inoculum concentrations was 3' x 106cellslml while 10% harvest of Chlorella sp. was effective to maintain high culture density that can prevent the invasion of unwanted species. These findings suggested that high initial inoculum concentrations of desired species may reduce the unwanted phytoplankton inco-cultivation systems
