Growth patterns and biomass allocation of Eichhornia crassipes grown in different salinity along the Sungai Sarawak, Kuching, Sarawak

Study on the influence of salinity on the growth patterns and biomass allocation of Eichhornia crassipes was carried out along 37 km upstream from the barrage of were Sungai Sarawak, Kuching, Sarawak. For every one km, plants were sampled by using 1m x 1m quadrates. No plant was recorded at K1 ( 1 km from the barrage), evaluated. K2, K3, K4 and K5 with the salinity ranging from 22.1 to 22.8 %. At K37 (37 km) from the barrage), no plant was recorded. The survey revealed that leaf weight ratio (LWR), shoot weight ratio (SWR), root weight ratio (RWR) and stolon weight ratio (StWR) of E. crassipes was highest at K14, K8 K18 and K36 respectively. The lowest values were recorded at K14 for SWR, K12 for RWR, K8 for both LWR and StWR. From the separate assessment of individual plants demonstrated that highest LWR was recorded at K11. K8 showed lowest LWR but highest in SWR. K15 provided the lowest values of SWR and highest for RWR. RWR and StWR were lowest at K7, K27, K8, K32 and K36. K23 showed highest reading for leaf area ratio (LAR) and specific leaf area (SLA) and lowest at K8 and K16. K25 had the highest dry weight (i.e 76.35g). The overall result revealed that the growth patterns and biomass allocation were clearly influenced by salinity along the Sungai Sarawak.
