Relationship between proanthocyanidins and organic matter degradability using in vitro gas production technique of four Leucaena species

Vanillin/HCI assay (VHA), butanol/HCl assay (BHA), and sodium sulphite-butanol/HCl assay (SHA) were used to compare the proanthocyanidins (PA) concentration of four Leucaena leucocephala species. The mean PA of all species was found to be higher with SHA (118.6) than the values obtained from VHA (110.2) and BHA (105.2 gkg-¹ DM). Across genotype, the PA content was positively correlated with OMD using the in vitro gas production (GP) technique. However, similar relationship did not occur when compared between PA and GP. The latter requires further examination as to whether chemical structure and biological activity of PA were the affecting factors.
