Effects of supplemental ascorbic acid on the performance and carcass characteristics of commercial broilers

The experiment was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of supplemental ascorbic acid on the performance of broiler chickens. They were fed 0 ppm, 10 ppm, 50 ppm, 100 ppm and 200 ppm supplemental ascorbic acid in feed respectively for a period of six weeks. The performance data generated during starter phase (0-3 weeks) revealed significantly (P<O.OOOl) higher weight gains in the supplemental groups as compared to control. During finisher phase (4-6 weeks) the feed intake and feed to gain ratio remained unaffected due to dietary treatments, same was recorded during the overall (0-6 week) study as well. The nutrient digestibility studies conducted during starter and finisher phase showed significantly (P<O.OOOl) higher values at higher levels of supplementation. The carcass traits like dressing percentage was significantly higher (P=0.0256) in supplemented groups than control group. The plasma and liver vitamin C content was positively correlated with the levels supplemented in diet. It can be concluded from the above study that supplementation of ascorbic acid at 200 ppm is beneficial for improving the performance of the commercial broilers.
