Multiplication of oil palm (Elaeis guinensis, L.) cultures in bioreactors

The bioreactor technique was developed in order to further improve the liquid culture system of oil palm. Work at MPOB revealed that oil palm liquid cultures could be multiplied in a B-Braun 'Biostat® B' 2L version 1.0 bioreactor. Some modifications were made to the bioreactor. After modifications, some cultures showed good proliferation with about 10- to 14-fold weight increment after 50 to 80 days. This bioreactor system thus has the potential for large scale multiplication of oil palm suspension cultures in a single run with efficient utilization of time and space. Cultures were also multiplied in Sixfors Multi Fermenter System (Infors, Bottmingen, Switzerland). The bioreactor with the working volume of 300 to 500 ml was suitable for small scale production and can also be used to study the behavior of cultures in response to nutrient and physical conditions. The fresh weight of cultures from clone E107 increased about 10-fold and cultures which has higher biomass utilized carbon sources faster. These findings on bioreactor will further enhance progress towards a semi or fully-automated process of oil palm clonal production.
