Pyrolysis of mangroves wood to produce charcoal in JMK kiln was studied from 300 to 700 degrees celcius at airflow rate of 9 m3/hr. Results showed that the fixed carbon content varied from 52.3 to 785 as the pyrolysis temperature increased from 300 to 700 degrees celcius. However, the volatile matters tend to decrease from 42 to 14.5% after 8.5 hours of pyrolysis period. Similarly, as the temperature rose up, the ash content, calorific values and BET surface area of the charcoal also tend to increase from 4.8 to 6.8%, 23.34 to 28.6 MJ/kg and 250.1 to 380.3 m2/g respectively. But the yield of charcoal production reduced from 44.7 to 20.3 5 on dry weight basis. The pyrolysis time was observed to increase in stages based on temperature range thus showed that pyrolysis for charcoal production for mangrove wood occured in stages.
