Effect of salinity on the growth and skin epidermis of young catfish Clarias macrocephalus
1997
Ahmed, G.U. | Tan, E.S.P.
The growth rate of Clarias macrocephalus fry was significantly higher in the control and lower salinity groups (0 ppt, 1 ppt and 2 ppt) when compared with that in the higher salinity groups (4 ppt and 5 ppt). Epidermal thickness, number and sizes of mucous cells and epithelial cells were also higher in the control and low salinity groups. On the other hand, number and size of chloride cells were higher in the higher salinity group. Catfish fry can be reared in a slightly saline environment and salinity level should not exceed 2 ppt.
