Egg collection from small-sized marble goby Oxyeleotris marmoratus by natural spawning method in tanks

In Malaysia, marble goby Oxyeleotris marmoratus is the most expensive freshwater fish and grows to more than 2 kg in body weight (BW). However, it is quite difficult to obtain brood fish larger than 300 g in BW since the aquaculture production is still small and the wild fish have overfished. To develop an egg collection technique for the seed production, artificial egg collection was attempted using 10 pairs of small-sized fish. Each pair of the brood fish was injected with HCG intramuscularly 3 or 4 times and allowed to spawn naturally in a 100 L tank with a shelter. The body weight of females used ranged from 108.7 to 270.5 g, and each female was paired with a slightly larger male. The number of eggs spawned was 13,213 from the smallest female and 19,989 from the largest one, and there was no significant correlation between BW and number of eggs spawned in the 10 pairs (r=0.490, t=1.590, df=8, 0.10 less than p less than 0.20). This implies that, in the BW range examined, a smaller female produces as many eggs as a larger one. The fertilization rate exceeded 90% and was not affected by the females` BW. The hatching rate varied from 73.8 to 94.5% and there was no significant correlation between BW and hatching rate (r=0.241, t=0.723, df=8, 0.40 less than P less than 0.50), implying that the quality of the eggs was independent of BW of female brood fish. From the results of this study, it was concluded that small-sized females of about 100-150 g in BW can be used as brood fish and the natural spawning method employed here was suitable for the purpose in artificial seed production from O. marmoratus.
