Some aspects of packaging goldfish Carassius auratus for long-distance transportation

A study was conducted to determine the optimum conditions for packaging of goldfish, Carassius auratus for long distance transportation. In all four experiments were carried out:- The effect of light, fish size and MS 222 on oxygen consumption rate by the fish, Stocking density, Effects of MS222, clinoptilolite and common salt, and Packaging and transportation of live fish in wet trays treated with MS222. The result from the study indicated that oxygen consumption rates by the fish was not affected by light but by fish size (lower for bigger fish) and application of MS 222 at 41.7 ppm also reduced oxygen consumption by all fish tested. The optimum packaging densities for small fish (14-20 g) are 45, 30, 30 fish/10 L bag for 24, 36, 48 hours duration respectively. For bigger fish (30-38 g) the packaging density are 30, 20, 20 fish/10 L bag respectively. The application of clinoptilolite at 20 g/L in 30 stocking density for 48 hours reduced the Ammonia-N content significantly (p less than 0.05) as compared to the control. However, the addition of MSS 222 at 41.7 ppm and common salt at 0.5% concentration in the bag did not improve survival of the fish after 48 hours. The result from the study on wet transportation of fish using trays indicate that the fish displayed 58.3% mortality after 4 hours when immersed in 100 ppm of MSS 222 for 10 minutes. At 50 ppm MS 222 concentration of 2-3 minutes immersion 75% mortality was recorded after 3 hours. Based on the above results, the optimum stocking densities for packaging are 30 fish for less than 24 hours and 20 fish for 24 - 48 hours in 10 L bag for 30 - 38 g fish and 45 fish for less than 24, and 30 fish for 24 - 48 hours for 14 - 20 g fish. The addition of 20 g/L of clinoptilolite reduced the Ammonia-N content in the bag. Transportation of goldfish in wet tray is not suitable to practice.
