Evaluation of hypoglycemic activity of Schisandra chinensis

Schisandra chinensis (Turcz.)Baill(Schisandraceae) is a famous component of Traditional Chinese Medicine of which is used as tonic, sedative and anti-hepatitis medication. It is commonly introduced as part of the formulation in anti-diabetic traditional medicine. The aim of the present study was to investigate the hypoglycemic activity of methanolic extracts of the fruit of Schisandra chinensis. Experiments were performed on normoglycemic mice. Liquid test samples which contained 0, 200, 400 and 1600 mg methanolic extracts/kg body weight of mouse were prepared and administered via the oral route to the respective groups of mice (n =10). The results showed that the methanolic extracts of the fruit of Schisandra chinensis did not exhibit any glucose lowering property in normoglycemic mice at the doses tested over a time span of 6 hours. The doses greater than 200 mg/kg brought about an increase in the blood glucose level at 2 hours after extract administration and this could be attributed to the containment of carbohydrate component in the extracts. Schisandra chinensis methanolic extract did not possess any hypoglycemic effect with regard to the normoglycemic mice.
