Structural and luminescent diversities of Eu3+ activated Gd2O3 nanophosphors

In this work, the synthesis of Gd2(OH)3 :Eu3+ nanowires via hydrothermal reaction at 200 °C and pH 12. Cubic Gd2O3:Eu3+ nanowires with high aspect ratio of~ 266.7 were formed after subsequent calcination of the as-synthesised hexagonal Gd2 (OH)3:Eu3+ at 750 °C. The cubic Gd2O3 :Eu3+ shows larger band gap than that of the as-synthesised Gd2(OH)3:Eu3+ because of its reduced structural order-disorder. The origin of the dominant red emission for 5D0- 7 F2 transition between the Gd2(OH)3:Eu3+ and Gd2O3:Eu3+ does not solely rely on the manifold f-f transitions of Eu3+ dopants but depends on the crystallographic symmetry and structural imperfection of Gd2O3 host.
