Reactions of several Capsicum spp to two severe cucumber mosaic virus isolates

Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) is one of the most common viruses which infects chilli plant in Malaysia. Thirty eight chilli accessions from different countries and two local varieties were screened for resistance against two severe CMV isolates,CMV-SU-2 isolated from Capsicum annuum and CMV-SN12 from Catharanthus roseus. The virus was inoculated mechanically onto the young leaves. Symptom developments were observed daily and recorded. Symptomless plants were screened using DAS-ELISA to detect latent infection. Results showed that only three accessions were resistant to both CMV isolates. The accessions were PBC 076 from Taiwan, PBC 402 from Nigeria and CO 1304 from England. Four accessions were resistant to either one of the two isolates. Accessions PBC 148, PBC 376 and PBC 377 were resistant to CMV-SU-2. Piement type was resistant to CMV-SN-12. None showed latent infection. Other accessions and varieties were susceptible to both isolates and showed different types of symptoms.
