Fruit breeding in Malaysia : progress and challenges ahead
2000
Chan, Y. K.
Breeding has played a key role in the development of the local fruit industry. A large number of commercial varieties have been developed using various methods including introductions, local selections from farmers' fields, hybridisation and induced mutations. This paper takes inventory of the fruit varieties developed in the country and discusses the future challenges fruit breeding will encounter. These challenges are brought about by changes in consumer and market preferences, evolution of orchard structures and the use of biotechnology applications for fruit breeding.
