A sustainable low cost tomato production system for under exploited spodosol in Malaysia

Psamments and spodosols (locally refered to as bris soils) cover 218,800 ha in Malaysia, and are found fronting the South China Sea. It is largely under exploited. Cultivation of crops have to overcome inherent problems characteristic of the soil like flooding hazards, water logging conditions, high surface temperatures, low water holding capacity, high leaching potential, extremely low nutrient content and low chemical activities (Zahari and Wong, 1986). To overcome such agronomic constraints, cultivation of vegetables, such as tomato, are conducted in bris soil enriched with chicken dung under simple shelters with watering facilities. Typically, incident radiation of these coastal dunal systems such as Sungai Baging, Pahang, Malaysia, on clear days is high; 1,200 mole/mls, with air temperatures reaching 36° C during the day and 25°C at night.
