Inhibition of quorum sensing regulated biofilm formation in Pseudomonas aeruginosa by Malaysian dietary plants

Antiquorum sensing (AQS) activity and the inhibitory action against Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 QS regulated biofilm production were investigated on ten aqueous and ethanol dietary plant extracts. The AQS activity of plant extracts was screened using the Chromobacterium violaceum (CV) N-acyl homoserine lactone (AHL) bioassay while biofilm investigation was performed using the crystal violet assay. In this study, the extracts tested did not show any AQS activity in the CV AHL bioassay. However, all ten plants from aqueous extract exhibited reduction in biofilm formation by at least 50%. In contrast to aqueous extracts, ethanol extracts did not show substantial effects in the inhibition of PAO1 biofilm virulence production. The ability to interrupt virulence factor production as shown by several dietary plants species suggested the potential of exploring natural products with GRAS (generally regarded as safe) properties for the development of further antibacterial therapy.
