Utilisation of cocoapeat and empty fruit bunches in vegetative propagation and cultivation of Kacip Fatimah (Labisia pathonia) and Belimbing Tanah (Tacca citrifolia)

Kacip Fatimah (Labisia pathonia) and belimbing tanah or keladi murai (Tacca citrifolia) can be propagated from seeds and through vegetative means. Seeds of both herbs take a very long time to germinate, i.e., more than two months and with very low success (less than 15%). Propagation through vegetative means is simple but the success rate is still low. This paper discusses the use of cocopeat and empty fruit bunches (EFB) to improve the rate of sprouting and the production of plantlets. The use of cocopeat and EFB as mulching on the sand bed improved the success rate very significantly. The number of plantlets increased very significant by splitting rhizome of T. citrifolia into about 4-5 em pieces. In the case of L. pathonia, the "root" was cut into 15 cm lengths to induce more plantlets. The methods for propagating these two herbs for commercial planting are discussed.
